Folk artists from Bihar, Bengal & special guest artist performance & workshop from Denmark -The orient West Choir

PATACHITRA
Patachitra artists depict mythological stories through long, intricate scroll paintings. The Patuas, as the artists are better known, combine painting with songs that narrate the story of the scroll as they unfurl it frame by frame. The patuas paint using natural colours. The songs they sing, known as Pater Gaan, have been passed down from generation to generation. New songs are based on themes that inspire the artists, be it Rabindranath Tagore's life story, the Tsunami or the need to plant trees and conserve forests.

MADHUBANI
Madhubani painting or Mithila painting is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar state.Painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments, and is characterized by eye-catching geometrical patterns.
Madhubani painting/Mithila painting has been done traditionally by the women of villages around the present town of Madhubani and Darbhanga (the literal meaning of Madhubani is forests of honey) and other areas of Mithila. The painting was traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.

Bihar is among the few Indian states which has a rich subaltern culture. The region's folk songs are associated with the various events in the life of an ordinary person. The folk music of Bihar has so deeply permeated in the life of the people that it is still alive.
Bihar dance comprises of various dances of folk and rural origin. Dance forms a very important aspect of life in Bihar. They are not treated as mere modes of entertainment but is intrinsically linked to the various significant activities of their lives.

-The Orient West Choir from Denmark
“The Orient West Orient Choir”, a modern contemporary interpretation of the musical connections between Judaism, Christianity and Islam,Composer, singer and songwriter Dalia Faitelson has created a personalised re-interpretation of Gregorian chant music. Based on Gregorian chants and musical modes, the “The Orient West Choir” will have musicians from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Palestine and Israel.

BAUL / FAKIRI
“Don’t look for god anywhere, look for Him in the human body”- this is the essence of Baul Fakiri music. They are wandering minstrels who sing about love and Universal brotherhood, overcoming caste, religion and biases. Their songs are accompanied by instruments like the Ektara, the Dotara, the Dhol, Khanjani, Khol, Dubki and Flute. Rabindranath Tagore had felt the power of their music and his work had been inspired by their songs. In today’s conflict ridden world the songs and philosophy of the Baul Fakiri remain just as relevant and inspiring.

CHAU
Chau is a vigorous form of martial dance popular in Eastern India. The dancers wear elaborate masks while performing breathtaking acrobatics. Heroism and bravery is the essence of Chau and the stories and forms of chau pay tribute to great warriors. The masks are specially created by skilled craftsmen in a hamlet called charida. The dances are accompanied by folk musical instrument like Dhol, Dhamsa, Charchari, Nakara, Khanjani, Flute and Sehnai. The music and movements work together to create a thrilling experience.
